The screenplay was written by Tony Gilroy, based on the novel by Dale Brown. The film is about the activities of a small band of American special forces and CIA operatives who lead an operation to steal a deadly biochemical weapon from the hands of a rebel group in Afghanistan. The film was released in the United States on September 23, 2006. The Good Shepherd was originally expected to be released in August 2006, but was pushed back to September because of lead actor Matt Damon's production of the 2007 film The Departed. It was also one of the first films to be released in IMAX. The film is based on events that occurred during 2002 when four American soldiers, Jason Bourne, Nick Rhodes, Danny Collin, and Doug Munro, were captured in the mountains of the Hindu Kush, near the Pakistan border. The team, tasked with retrieving a deadly bio-weapon called T-X, is under orders from the CIA to escape and return to the United States with the microchip. Contents Plot An American soldier, Sergeant Antonio Portillo (Matt Damon), is ordered to retrieve a weapon called T-X, which, if it falls into the hands of terrorists, would lead to the extinction of civilization. Two CIA operatives, Robert Dewey (Albert Finney) and Ben Elliot (John Malkovich), are also in pursuit of the device. Portillo leads a team of four to locate and stop the mercenary force, which is about to break into a nearby village. A pickup truck carries several weapons and two heavily-armed guards. The team takes the guards alive. One of them claims that their two guides have been killed and that the other is coming. As Portillo listens, an unarmed man named Mohammed Akrami (Fawad Khan) approaches him and starts talking. He claims he has been tasked with helping find the T-X. He tells Portillo that he is from Afghanistan, where he was assigned to help the Americans. Portillo recognizes Mohammed and tells him that he needs help. The two men decide to escape. At a refueling point, Portillo gets into a gunfight with a group of Taliban soldiers. He kills their leader, and then it is a race against time to get out of the mountains and get home. Meanwhile, at the CIA, Robert Dewey and Ben Elliot and their teams locate the truck and attempt to follow the vehicle that has been used to transport the T-X, but they are ambushed by the mercenaries
